Power generation from waste heat by using ORC expansion engine



Elevator Pitch

DeVeTec GmbH was founded in 2000 with the idea of recovering unused waste heat in industrial processes as optimally as possible. The starting point was the development of compact modules for the heat recovery in vehicles. The focus shifts quickly to high output plants used in energy-intensive industries and in the field of renewable energy.
Based on several of their own patents, DeVeTec made the waste heat power plants with piston engines ready for series production. Today, several plants with capacities up to 270 kWel are proving themselves in daily routine operations in a variety of applications. All projects realized to date recover energy from different heat sources and they are saving energy without extra use of flue and no CO2 emissions.
In 2015 DeVeTec reached market maturity and successfully established a Joint Venture in China to take part in the world's hottest growth story.


The centerpiece of each highly efficient thermal power plant from DeVeTec is the expander. Various basic research conducted within the context of R&D activities concluded that the piston machine is the system with the highest efficiency.
Piston expansion engines achieve a very high pressure differential in a single stage so that the enthalpy gradient increases significantly to thus generate much more electricity than is possible using related technologies. Another significant advantage of the piston expansion engine is its real partial-load capacity. Depending on the amount of waste heat available, the V8 engine operates in the 0-130 kW range, the V12 engine in the 0-200 kW range, or the V16 engine in the 0-266 kW range at nearly constant efficiency. Should other heat sources with lower temperatures be exploited, then the same engine can also be operated with other organic fluids without having to be modified. Following an intense developmental and testing period with industrial application partners over five years, DeVeTec's waste heat power plants are now available in a single product family with three performance classes. This allows unused waste heat flows between 800 kW and 2 MW to generate electricity highly efficiently at a temperature level above 230°C. The waste heat from power plants can be adjusted to the exact needs of the customer.

Why we are ecofriendly

Increasing energy efficiency is one of the major challenges of our time. DeVeTec’s ORC technology makes an important contribution to this: DeVeTec's waste heat power plants recover the maximum energy from industrial processes by simultaneously generating electricity and then using the remaining energy on different temperature levels. This way, they make an important contribution in increasing energy efficiency. They are also a model example of CO2-neutral and zero emission power generation because a DeVeTec waste heat power plant with a nominal output of 200 kWel can save up to 3,000 t/CO2 per year.
Any waste heat source of at least 230°C and with an output of at least 0.7 MW can produce electricity and heating energy using DeVeTec’s ORC system. The system works with industrial furnaces, CHP plants, heat-intensive chemical processes, and where waste heat flows with the above characteristics occur.
DeVeTec’s ORC waste heat power plant is recognized as a CHP solution. It improves not only the energy balance of customers’ company but also saves fuel and energy costs. In addition, bio-ethanol is seen as an eco-friendly, inexpensive and sustainable working fluid and it will not be affected by the F-Gas regulation. For industrial customers a payback time between 2 and 5 years can be achieved. The payback time is even shorter due to the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) subsidy schemes which are in place in different countries.

DeVeTec’s project Energy and CO2-savings by high efficient power generation with waste heat was chosen from among 600 candidates by an independent jury convened by German Federal President Joachim Gauck. The projects were selected for their quality, innovative and model character just as much as for their technical, social and economic application potential and relevance.
Parallel to the exhibition, lectures, debates and expert forums will be held related to climate protection, energy policy and sustainability.

DeVeTec GmbH has been nominated by the top-class jury of the German Industry’s Innovation Award in the medium-sized enterprises category for its innovation in the field of energy efficiency.

The winners of this year’s competition will be disclosed at a festive prize ceremony to take place the 16th of April in Darmstadt.

This year, the German Industry’s Innovation Award, ERSTER INNOVATIONSPREIS DER WELT®, honors the German industry’s most essential scientific, technical, entrepreneurial and intellectual innovations for the 35th time.

Enviromental Impact

A DeVeTec waste heat power plant with a nominal output of 200 kWel can save up to 3,000 t/CO2 per year. It uses waste heat that often could not be efficiently recovered or even had to be discharged into the environment unused. DeVeTec ORC waste heat power plants convert this valuable waste heat into valuable electricity.

Economic Impact

Any waste heat source of at least 230°C and with an output of at least 0.7 MW can produce electricity and heating energy using DeVeTec’s ORC waste heat power plant. More than 500 industrial companies can be considered as target group with waste heat quantities ranging from 2 to 20 MWth, so that each company can potentially use more than one ORC module. The general objective is to obtain a share of about 50% in the industrial market whereas in other markets a share of 25% to 30%.

Social Impact

The ORC steam expansion engine from DeVeTec has been proved to be a cost-effective instrument without necessarily increasing energy consumption. During the following years, DeVeTec GmbH will continue developing the ORC-technology and expand its business to foreign countries in order to make more contribution to increasing global energy efficiency.
