Kemwatt

Early Stage Startup

Tagline

An innovative flow battery for the world market of energy storage

Elevator Pitch

Kemwatt develops a disruptive flow battery technology for the world market of stationary energy storage. Founded in 2014 further to research made at the Institute for Chemical Sciences of Rennes, it has raised € 2m. with 2 investment funds, Go Capital and Emertec, Ouest Valorisation, and individual investors. It has won several prizes and grants worth € 0.7 m.
We are currently in the first stages of industrial prototyping with a 4 kW unit and a full 20 kW system at the end of 2016. We are looking for a strategic partner for the next stages, in order to launch the first products, industrialize manufacturing and develop our sales.

Product

Kemwatt develops flow batteries in the range of several kW to several MW and several hours of capacity. Flow batteries are ideal for instance for the storage of renewable energy because they store energy in liquids, in the right range of power and capacity.

The conventional flow battery technology is difficult to implement because it is based on metals dissolved in highly acidic solutions, which leads to lifetime, cost, safety and environmental issues.

Based on organic molecules in alkaline solutions, Kemwatt's technology leads to a cheaper, long-duration, safer, more reliable and more environmentally friendly battery.

Why we are ecofriendly

Our batteries are more ecofriendly than most other options and they will boost the renewable energy market by making wind and solar energy available at will at a reasonable cost.

Enviromental Impact

Flow batteries can have a huge environmental impact by enabling renewable energy to get a major share of the energy mix: once you can store renewable energy, there is no need anymore for fossil fuels in energy generation.
In addition to this, the electrolytes used in Kemwatt's technology can be selected for their environmentally friendly properties. This and the long lifetime of the system result in a lower use of resources, good recyclability and eventually an extremely positive environmental impact.

Economic Impact

Because they store energy in liquids, flow batteries should have a tremendous economic impact on systems designed to store several hours of energy production, in the range from dozens of kW to several MW (suited to solar and wind production), with a much lower capex than current options such a lithium-ion. As Kemwatt's technology is not based on corrosive electrolytes, it also has unique reliability and lifetime features that will result in much lower opex than the current flow battery and conventional battery technologies.

Social Impact

Flow batteries have the potential to make distributed energy a disruptive trend, creating a whole new landscape in a world dominated by centralized energy production until today. This can happen for instance in emerging economies, where millions of remote communities can build solar + storage microgrids in months instead of waiting for years for a possible connection to the grid. And it can also take place in advanced economies, where players like local communities, industrial energy users as well as traditional utilities can find new models to better take advantage of renewable energy.

Awards

Kemwatt has received several national and local awards in France, including the i-lab grand prize, won calls for projets by BPI France and Ademe and was selected for the NETVA program (access to the US market).
