Renewable energies penetrate electricity grids worldwide. One huge drawback is their intermittent power output, leading to blackouts if no further measures are implemented. Solving this complex challenge is the only way towards a CO2-free, reliable and economic electricity supply.

ORKESS works on tomorrow’s electricity grids. Flywheels with high power output, cycle life and efficiency are a perfect solution for the required dynamic grid balancing. The start-up’s adaptive energy storage system provides the grid stabilizing functionality of conventional generators (diesel, coal, nuclear) in terms of frequency and voltage control as well as spinning reserve.

ORKESS offers tailored solutions for all electricity grids at minimum costs with maximum benefits. The new outer-rotor flywheel is:

Adaptive - Every electricity grid has different requirements concerning power and capacity of the energy storage system. After analyzing the field of application, power and capacity of the flywheel are independently adapted.

Dynamic - A high efficiency motor-generator delivers instantaneous and precise power without degradation. The highly integrated carbon-fiber rotor provides exact information about the flywheels' state of charge.

Sustainable - Contact free magnetic bearings and ultra-high vacuum environment provide maximum efficiency, minimum maintenance and lead to an unlimited cycle life. No hazardous materials are used.



Why we are ecofriendly

Due to their intermittent power output renewable energies are not capable to stabilize electricity grids. The adaptive ORKESS flywheel provides the needed dynamic grid balancing. It enables the further increase of the share of renewable energies and brings electricity grids one step further towards CO2 neutrality.
