Elevator Pitch

Photanol develops a breakthrough technology to convert CO2 and sunlight into valuable organic compounds. We are applying this technology in a number of markets, ranging from food ingredients to bio-based chemical building blocks and bio-fuels.

Photanol’s technology overcomes all disadvantages of current biobased technologies. The Photanol-concept uses engineered bacteria that turn CO2 directly and efficiently into predetermined products when exposed to light. This CO2-consuming process is based on circular economy principles and is truly sustainable, widely applicable and independent of food economy.

Photanol technology is not dependent on soil quality nor does it need high-tech infrastructure. Application is modular and hence can be globally employed to the benefit of consumers from both local small-scale settings and (very) large-scale industrial production. Compared to classical fermentation, Photanol uses 40 times less land area and up to 10.000 times less water.

Product


The Photanol concept is based on the capacity of cyanobacteria to efficiently produce organic compounds from CO2, using sun light as their source of energy. Cyanobacteria are one of the oldest living organisms in the world, and in 3,5 billion of years they have specialized in reproducing themselves using photosynthesis.

By genetically introducing properties of fermentative bacteria into these cyanobacteria, the Photanol technology enables these bacteria to produce and excrete valuable compounds such as biofuels, bioplastics, essential oils and many others. The only by-product formed is oxygen.

Numerous other biotechnological processes make use of engineered organisms in order to produce bulk or fine chemicals, but in these cases the process consumes sugar or other organic substance. The overall energy conservation of these methods is highly inefficient and therefore demands large surface areas. In addition, the crop processes are rather labor-intensive, are demanding with respect to water consumption and affect food stock prices with adverse consequences for food supplies.

Photanol has achieved a rapid extension of its product range. We currently have proof of principle of around 10 products. Production itself has seen a significant increase in yield (4 fold in 4 years). Indeed, in many cases the Photanol-technology has a product yield per surface that is 3-6 fold better than conventional technologies. No doubt, Photanol's on-going research will improve the yield even further. All together this shows the concept to be viable and of general value.



Why we are ecofriendly

Photanol has developed a truly disruptive technology platform with the potential to produce a broad range of chemical compounds. In the process CO2 is consumed and the only by-product is O2.

The Photanol process is not only simple and cheap, but is also more sustainable than other technologies: It is 40 times more efficient in terms of land use and 10.000 times more efficient in terms of water use compared to technologies based on fermentation.
