SHELLHOUSE

Early Stage Startup

The fully insulated housing concept

Elevator Pitch

SHELLHOUSE stands for highly competitive house insulation properties, allowing users to save 60% on heating costs. SHELLHOUSE is a project being incubated under the umbrella of the independent think tank ANTHILLS in Switzerland.

The fully insulated housing concept, was inspired by the work of the Swiss civil engineer Heinz Isler, who created light yet robust shell-like constructions made of reinforced concrete. Martin Tschaggelar developed the idea of a fully insulating and self-supporting building shell made from expanded polystyrene (EPS) combined with reinforced plasters. Manufactured entirely by machine, the SHELLHOUSE is a sleek, elegant unit with astounding qualities. Reliable, highly efficient technology merges with natural esthetics to create an evolutionary innovation.

The SHELLHOUSE is multi-functional and robust. It can be manufactured quickly and inexpensively. Thanks to the insulation properties of the materials used and the ease with which they can be recycled, the SHELLHOUSE provides an outstanding ecobalance. The rate of heat loss of a SHELLHOUSE equipped with high-quality windows and doors corresponds to the standards for a certified low-energy-house. Large quantities of uncontaminated polystyrene resulting from the recycling of an entire SHELLHOUSE hull can be reprocessed to make new products without adding additives.

SHELLHOUSE has an IP granted for the construction method, but its main protection comes from the secret formula of the composite materials that cover the house shell.

Why we are ecofriendly

The SHELLHOUSE has an outstanding life cycle and maintains an excellent ecological balance. The Swiss Federal Laboratories for Material Sciences and Technology EMPA, using the “smart spider” valuation method, rated polystyrene EPS 30, the material used to make the SHELLHOUSE body, as “very good” for the criteria conservation of resources and environment, level of harmful substances, processing safety and recyclability.

The material has outstanding insulation properties with low embodied energy content. Low maintenance requirements also contribute to the extremely positive life cycle assessment rating.

The single-unit or modularly fabricated shell has both an insulating and load-bearing function. Construction time is extremely short – saving labour, energy and financial resources. The fully insulated SHELLHOUSE consists of a uniform hull without thermal bridges, which can result in heat loss (assuming doors, windows and the transition to the base are properly insulated, too). The rate of heat loss (U-value) of a SHELLHOUSE equipped with high-quality windows and doors corresponds to the standards for a certified low-energy-house.

Polystyrene EPS 30, which is usually used to insulate the basement level of buildings, was selected for the SHELLHOUSE because of its structural, physical and manufacturing properties. Large quantities of uncontaminated polystyrene resulting from the recycling of an entire SHELLHOUSE hull can be reprocessed to make new products without adding additives.
