Elevator Pitch

„In developing countries, limited access to finance is already the second-most cited obstacle for businesses, right after unstable electricity.” (Source: International Finance Corporation (IFC)). Local businesses in developing countries are prone to fast rising electricity cost and lack a stable power supply. At the same time, solar energy systems are a viable alternative to overcome these problems. However, as of today only few small and medium sized solar projects are realized. This comes as international financing instruments aim at large projects of at least 20 million € and local bank loans only provide short maturity loans that come at high interest rates. Because of this solar projects are not being implemented although they are technical and financial viable.

Ecoligo addresses this financing gap by offering solar projects with single energy off-takers in developing countries to an international crowd that is looking for sustainable investment opportunities. Once projects are financed, ecoligo subcontracts the construction to a local partner that also performs technical operation and maintenance. After two years of operation, ecoligo has collected substantial data about the project performance as well as the off-takers payment attitude. Based on this, projects can be clustered into validated portfolios. These can then be presented to institutional investors that value the risk reduction.

Product

For the energy off-takers: Reliable and cheap solar power. Reducing energy cost of up to 40%.
For the crowdinvestors: An attractive investment with an environmental and social impact. Providing attractive returns of 5% with a short investment period of 2 years.
For the institutional investors: Validated projects with a proven performance.

In order to realise the above described offering, Ecoligo is developing a software that incorporates all payment streams, project performance data, off-taker payment data and market relevant information. Based on this, transparency for the crowdinvestors is given, project track records are being build and with algorithms project portfolios can be generated.

Why we are ecofriendly

Ecoligo realizes solar projects in developing countries – countries in which current electricity generation, due to the high number of outages in the main grid, is largely coming from diesel backup generators. The solar projects will mitigate generation from diesel backup generators and further reduce consumption from the main grid. This results in an overall smaller CO2 footprint of the commercial and industrial solar energy consumers. Every kWh saves about 1 kg CO2 with respect to the normal electricty mix, as the CO2 emissions are on average double as high in non-OECD countries compared to OECD countries.
