Social business engaged in affordable solar water disinfection for BoP

Elevator Pitch

Helioz R&D is a social enterprise engaged in the development, research and sale of affordable and efficient tools for low-income households, humanitarian organizations, emergency aid organizations and companies around the globe. Helioz R&D focuses on finding innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social problems and is a member of the United Nations Global Compact.

Product

Helioz R&D has developed an inexpensive and easy-to-use device, especially adapted for the Base of the Pyramid (BoP), called WADI. The use of this water disinfection tool is simple and does not need any further training. It is screwed on a water-filled PET bottle like a cap and measures the relevant UV rays that disinfect the water. The microbial reduction in the water is indicated by a progress bar, and a happy smiley face is displayed as soon as the water is safe to drink. Internationally understandable pictograms are attached to WADI in order to provide an easily understandable instruction for users.

The patented device WADI is made of recyclable plastic, in line with a “cradle to cradle design” which stands for eco-efficient production. With its built-in solar panel, WADI works energy self-sufficient and is maintenance-free for at least five years - all at a cost of less than 10€ per piece.

WADI is therefore a great innovation to tackle CO2-emmissions caused by hundreds of millions of domestic fires that are made to boil water - every day.

Why we are ecofriendly

WADI is a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative to traditional methods of water disinfection like boiling the water or using chlorine tablets. WADI is not only solar powered, but also uses the sun's UV rays for the disinfection of water. It is therefore a solution to one of the biggest CO2 producers worldwide: domestic fireplaces. Also, WADI has a guaranteed life cycle of five years and is made of recyclable plastic, which decays whithin two years after throwing it away. Along with WADI, we plan on selling bottles made out of the same material, so as to ensure environmental sustainability.

Latest News

The Austrian NGOs Samariterbund and GEZA have carried out projects in the region oft the Hurri Hills in northern Keya since 2011. The region is very dry and faces extended dry periods due to climate change. By building water tanks we enable access to water. However, as the water can become contaminated with bacteria within those tanks or when extracting the water, water disinfection is especially important.

Samariterbund and GEZA are now using WADI on a pilot basis in the villages Arano, Kubi Koti, Daqane and Sasala in northern Kenya. Hundreds of villagers have been trained in the use of WADI and apply those methods on a regular basis. The first feedback has been extremely positive and villagers have taken over solar-based water disinfection as opposed to using fires or chlorine tablets.

Customers

The core and target market for our product WADI are people living at the base of the economic pyramid (BoP) in developing countries. A common definition of BoP customers is that of people earning less than 2US$ a day.

This means that beneficiaries of WADI are to a large extent people from developing countries including, but not limited to, India, Pakistan, Uganda, Ghana, Kenya etc. Help support the distribution of WADI to ensure that poor families, and especially their kids under the age of 5, have access to safe water!

We distribute WADI through different channels such as distribution partners in developing and industrial countries as well as through NGOs. Currently, our direct customers include large NGOs and government agencies in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
