Online platform providing solar energy & sustainability education

Elevator Pitch

We have set out to enable all schools to install solar panels at no cost and integrate the solar panels into the curriculum. Practically, this means bringing schools and investors together on an online platform to provide schools with low- or no-cost solar solutions and where schools can utilize actual energy production and consumption data from live, on-site solar panel systems.

We not only provide a product, funded solar panel systems, that helps cut greenhouse gas emissions and no costs to schools, but we utilize it in such a way that engages the younger generation to create a mindfulness about sustainability while enhancing their daily studies. The benefits for schools and their students include financial savings, lower environmental impact in the way of decreased carbon emissions and access to data and online tools that can be used as experiential learning opportunities.

Launched in early 2015, we will manage the solar assets on 56 schools in the UK and Germany, totalling over 2.7MW. Solar Options for Schools Ltd was co-founded by Robert Schrimpff who combines 10 years of building online businesses including hotels.com and nearly 9 years of Cleantech Venture Capital experience, including leading the investments and sitting on the boards of two solar companies; Lumicity (uk solar project developer sold to RWE) and TenKsolar (intelligent module manufacturer that just raised 25m from Goldman Sachs). Martin Augustin (Cofounder & COO) who has worked with Robert before and has 10 years renewable consultancy and project development experience (Eon, RES projects) and Ted Scheidegger (Chairman) who ran Siemens Solar and a number of other solar startups in the past.

Product

We earn an initial fee from each solar panel system facilitated and an ongoing share of the income streams generated by each solar asset in exchange for managing them on behalf of the school and investors.

Why we are ecofriendly

The problem of exuberant greenhouse gases emissions from burning coal can be solved by utilizing alternative energy sources. Solar for Schools provides a platform to allow schools to use energy generated from a renewable resource & experiential sustainability education for students. With this, we empower students to take proactive steps towards creating a more sustainable world, and hence we create a generation of individuals who are predisposed to making choices to live more sustainably.

Fundraising

Following a 160k UKP seed round led by the Low Carbon Innovation Fund and a number of internet focused VC’s in a personal capacity, we are now seeking more funding, to further develop our systems into a scalable, transparent and trusted platform ultimately capable of attracting and managing up to 100bn of funding for solar assets on schools worldwide.

Solar for Schools is also seeking social impact investors and charities interested in lending, rather than donating, at low cost to fund portfolios of solar on schools. Whilst project IRRs of 10%+ are possible, we are very keen to work with funds and charities interested in helping schools and children rather than pure return maximisation, so that we can address more schools and provide them with greater financial savings.

Enviromental Impact

2,600 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions avoided since January 2015.
Globally schools could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50m tonnes a year by installing solar panels funded by third parties. And midterm, we strongly believe that education our children - the generation of tomorrow - on how to live sustainably will have an even greater impact on the environment.

Economic Impact

235,000 UKP in saved energy costs since 2015

Social Impact

23,000 students have seen renewable energy in action.
By providing real, live data on a schools energy consumptions and comparing it to the solar panels output students can see renewable in action and be inspired to help the school save money while learning about the opportunities (clean sustainable energy) and challenges (balancing supply and demand) that solar power brings. In order to develop specific lesson and project based on these tools we have recently set up an Education Advisory Board consisting of 4 international experts in sustainability in education. With their help we are also working on collecting and classifying the best online learning tools related to solar power from around the world in our new resources section.
