yetuEarly Stage Startup
Discover a new world at home.
Why aren’t our homes ‘smart’ already? Because of today’s technology flaws in compatibility, usability and data privacy.
yetu solves them all.
yetu is the world’s first smart home solution that connects all devices in a household and lets users run their entire home through one simple online platform that works across all devices. yetu guarantees highest data security through hardware-based encryption and is built entirely on open source.
The Berlin-based startup was founded in 2010, following the strong belief that the internet will entirely change and enrich our lives at home, and that this can only be achieved with an open platform. Since then, the team has grown to 39 people from 14 nations, closed a highly successful Series A, signed two major partners and is in talks with 90+ more.
yetu is a cloud based open smart home platform. The platform is technology agnostic, works independent of operating systems and consistently across screens, and connects the whole household community with a personalized Homescreen frontend that provides access to services on any device.
This platform allows B2B partners to deliver their entire web based services and all web services of third parties to the home of their customers. These services can range anywhere from Entertainment, Communication, Home Automation, Security, Energy to Health/Lifecare solutions.
yetu will provide open APIs to developers and hardware manufacturers, so all kinds of hardware in the home can be connected over time, and all kinds of services can access and use household data or control the household across verticals.
The key components of the yetu smart home platform are:
_ yetu provides a complete front-end for web-based smart home applications with a consistent user interface across PC, TV, tablet and smartphone. It features an open app store and a control center that allow smart home manufacturers as well as independent developers to create innovative apps based on a hypermedia REST API.
_ yetu provides an end-to-end IoT middleware as a generic cloud service that allows secure communication from and into the household via an event channel for controls and monitoring information and an asynchronous channel for software updates or new software images, household representation in the cloud (needed for full scalability, remote management, as well as integration from various sources), as well as an abstraction service that allows to make every “thing” available to web developers, that can be connected either in the household or via the cloud (through a simple ESH binding). Developers can use the IoT middleware through a hypermedia REST API. This allows developers to use all connectable “things” as if they were simple web objects, which simplifies the programming model.
_ yetu provides a novel Gateway Operating System including a disruptive security solution (leveraging hardware encryption and putting the user in complete control re: his/her data), an integration framework to allow for interoperating between various communication standards and deployment of rules based on Eclipse Smart Home, as well as the operating systems part itself built on Chromium OS, enabling state management, leveraging hardware capabilities and managing authentication and controlling rights.
Moreover, yetu’s business and go-to-market model has several important features:
_ B2B2C go-to-market model: yetu does not directly distribute to end customers. Instead, yetu partners with large fixed-line telecommunications or cable operators and energy providers who already reach millions of households in their home markets.
_ End-user-friendly business model: yetu makes money by charging its distributor partners a software-as-a-service fee (2 EUR per month per connected household). If an end user purchases an app via yetu’s open app store, the developer receives 80% of the resulting revenue, while the remaining 20% are shared evenly between yetu and the distribution partner. yetu will never make money from selling user data.
_ Mixed software / hardware model: yetu is at its core a software platform. To deliver the platform to households with its distribution partners, yetu has also developed an initial hardware gateway (a small box comparable to multimedia products like Apple TV, Chromecast or Amazon Fire TV) that connects to any device at home. However, the yetu platform can easily be ported onto other pieces of customer premises equipment (CPE), e.g. internet routers, cable modems or set-top boxes – hence, the hardware component is merely an optional element during the initial pilot and trial phases. In each case, yetu relies on a reference design that enables open and secure access to all established communications standards in the home and provides user data security via a trusted platform module and an innovative approach of anonymising user data where it is first captured – right in users’ homes.
Why we are ecofriendly
With our Home Energy Management System integrated on our open Smart Home Platform, we engage people to save energy by providing full transparency on energy consumption per device and peer group comparisons.
Via our platform, we provide device recognition algorithms to the developer community, that are purely software based and work with a usual smart meter and do not require additional hardware. By consecutively adding heating and water, as well as home automation capabilities, savings potential will increase over time.
2014 was a big year! yetu...
... launched its open smart home platform,
... signed its first partnership agreement with none less than Deutsche Telekom
... and was awarded the German Energy Efficiency Prize Perpetuum 2014 by the German Industry Initiative for Energy Efficiency (DENEFF) for the novel Home Energy Management System integrated on its open Smart Home Platform.
And we are looking forward to keep going strong in 2015!
